What programs has the Legislature already put in place, and what do we know about the effectiveness of these programs? What can we learn from local education agencies that have had success? What can we learn from other states? The committee will hear briefings to help the committee address these questions as it considers policy and funding options related to improving early grade reading and math proficiency in Utah.

10:30 a.m.      3. Method for Selecting State Board of Education Members

In the 2015 General Session, legislators proposed several pieces of legislation to change Utah’s method for selecting state board of education members, but ultimately none of the legislation passed. The committee will hear about unique methods that other states use for selecting state board of education members and discuss a new legislative proposal.
