Overview -- The application used by the Utah State Legislature to produce and track legislation was developed in cooperation with Xlink Corporation, Chicago, IL. The front end applications were developed using Microsoft Access and Visual Basic with Microsoft SQL Server as the database. We use Corel WordPerfect 8 as the text editor, integrated into the application. The calendaring information is generated by voting system applications written by International Roll Call. Greg Johnson, the Senate' information technology specialist, wrote the programs to access and distribute legislative calendar information. Web Site -- Our Web server is a Compaq Proliant 6/200 running Windows NT server. We have a large number of Folio Infobases that we create and use in the legislative process and for that reason chose Folio Sitedirector as the Web software. Web Pages -- Our main web pages were created with Macromedia Dreamweaver 3 and Fireworks 3. The agenda and text of legislation are produced originally in WordPerfect 8 and converted to HTML using Wp2Html. This is a tool that was written by Andrew Scriven in the U.K. Bill Document and Agenda Formats -- The full-text of bills and agendas may be retrieved in three formats: HyperText Markup Language (HTML), Portable Document Format (PDF), and WordPerfect 6, 7, and 8 zipped format. To retrieve a bill in plain text without formatting, click on HTML; to retrieve a PDF file containing page and line numbers, you must download the Adobe Acrobat Reader and then click on PDF; to retrieve a WordPerfect compressed or zipped file, you must unzip the file using a special program (see zipped files). Text Search -- Since we were already creating Folio Infobases for use on our network, we copy these to the Web Server each day during the session for searching. The links in the latest version of the bill text and bill status make navigation through these infobases easier. Daily Updates -- We update most of the information each day the legislature meets. The procedures involve a combination of WordPerfect macros, NextPage's Folio, Microsoft Access, Visual Basic, WinBatch, and WinZip. If you have more questions contact the Webmaster ...
