Dear Utah Congress and Utah Senate,

In a Whisper tone…Should Utah give children electronic devices?

This was Laura Ingalls Wilder’s thinking after hearing (and reciting in her mind),The Declaration of Independence in a town crowd and then singing in a groupMy country ’Tis of Thee….

God is America’s King.  She thought:  Americans won’t obey any king on earth.  Americans are free.  That means they have to obey their own consciences.  No king bosses Pa; he has to boss himself.  Why (she thought), when I am a little older, Pa and ma will stop telling me what to do, and there isn’t anyone else who has the right to give me orders.  I will have to make myself be good.  Her whole mind seemed to be lighted up by that thought.  This is what it means to be free.  It means you have to be good.  “Our father’s God, author of liberty—“The laws of Nature and of Nature’s God endow you with the right to life and liberty.  Then you have to keep the laws of God, for God’s law is the only thing that gives you the right to be free.”

Wilder’s slat board, single room and home education gave a 13 year old truth and tools for life.  This quote is contained in the Fourth of July chapter ofThe Little Town on the Prairie.   Wilder’s education was “common” and equally given to her peers and equal in quality to European Noblemen’s education (Alexis de Tocoqueville’s American’s education review inDemocracy in America).

I obey laws.  Please don’t take my parent’s rights away.  I won’t allow my child electronics without filters and trusted supervision. Hackers can be little people.  My position is common to the LDS community. Elder Robert D. Hales said, “In past ages, when someone wanted trouble he generally had to go searching forit. ‘Today temptation finds you!’”  (http://www.deseretnews.com/article/765626242/Elder-Robert-D-Hales-Stand-Strong-in-Holy-Places.html?pg=all).  Public Billboards, mall shopping bags and unsearched YouTube images appear.

My religious leader Bishop Angus (LDS American Fork 37th Ward) had spoken on September 29, 2013 and February 23, 2014 regarding media with a handout.  He did not believe a 12 year old should be given a smart phone because of the phone’s internet capacity…and maybe young adults as well.

How can Utah financially afford electronics for students? The fees for school need to be closer to zero and budgets need rainy day funds.  -Is this capital? No.  Children normally fumble in their growing bodies.  Who will carry insurance for replacement for all reasons?  Budget needs to acknowledge the cost to help additions from over use, and wrong use of the devices, etc.

Tim Ballard explained in The Covenant that after George Washington was sworn into office, Congressmen linked arms to walk to St. Paul’s church in New York City, New York, to make a covenant to obey God’s laws.  This Covenant was made in every town’s churches throughout the new nation.  Media greatly effects the rising generations.  Link arms with those who understand freedom and support it.                       Sincerely,            Vicki Gerlach (Mother of 10)  (c) 801-879-2821, vicki@brevium.com  (Family bought the professional picture copyright.)
