Recognizing Our Hospital Heroes

The Coalition to Protect America's Health Care,

a voice in support of financially-strong hospitals,  recently launched Hospital Heroes, a program that showcases hospital caregivers and many others who go above and beyond in their work to help patients and their communities.

A Hospital Heroes website is now live at http://protecthealthcare.org/hospital-heroes to tell their stories and spotlight these special individuals. The Coalition invites all hospitals to get involved in the effort by doing one or all of the following:

The American Hospital Association, a founding member of the Coalition, encourages all systems and hospitals to support the Coalition by participating in Hospital Heroes and inviting your staff to become part of the Coalition's growing online community, now numbering more than 750,000. To date, supporters have submitted more than 700 hospital heroes representing a variety of hospital roles. All stories will be placed on our Hospital Heroes website and many will be spotlighted over social media and email.

Please contact Emily Shelman at

infophc@aha.org for more information on the Hospital Heroes program.
Hospital Happenings
Four healthcare systems operating in Utah were named to Hospital and Health Network's list of Healthcare's "Most Wired" for 2014. Those recognized in this year's list include Hospital Corporation of America, IASIS Healthcare, Intermountain Healthcare and University of Utah Health Care. The survey is designed to measure the level of IT adoption in U.S. hospitals and health systems, and is a useful tool for hospital and health system leadership to map their IT strategic plans.

Jordan Valley Medical Center is expanding to include a comprehensive cancer center, set to open by the fall of 2015. As a part of the project, Jordan Valley will be partnering with Elekta to bring the Versa HD radiotherapy system to Utah. Construction on the new center is set to begin this fall.

New Secure Portal

The new Secure Portal in QualityNet is active, and many staff have begun using it to submit their reporting data. There are still some glitches that QualityNet is working to correct. Based on these challenges, the reporting deadlines for Quarter 1, 2014 discharges have been slightly delayed:

  • Outpatient Quality Measures and Population and Sampling entry is now due on August 21, 2014
  • Inpatient Quality Measures and Validation Templates are now due on August 28, 2014.
  • Healthcare Associated Infections (HAI) data is still due on August 15, 2014. This data is entered through the NHSN site so is not affected by the new Portal.

Meaningful Use Webinar

Another item you may be interested in if you have not yet started on is Meaningful Use; HealthInsight is hosting a webinar on Meaningful Use on August 19, 2014. This is targeted to those who are still early in this process and will cover the basics of the program and answer questions on getting started. More details are to be sent out very soon.

HealthInsight Quality Awards

Lastly, we will be awarding the Hospital HealthInsight Quality Awards based on hospitals' performance on 19 inpatient and outpatient process of care measures and a national survey of patients' experience of hospital care (HCAHPS). The process of care and survey ranks are combined into a single overall performance ranking , with the process of care measures contributing 70% and the survey results 30% to the overall rank. Hospitals at or above the 75th percentile nationally in this combined ranking receive a HealthInsight Quality Award. Recognition certificates will be given to the hospital demonstrating the greatest overall improvement in clinical quality and the hospital demonstrating the greatest overall improvement in patients' perception of care (HCAHPS).

Awards and recognition certificates will be presented at the 2014 Utah Hospital Association Annual Awards Dinner.
