As a certified Secondary Education Teacher who has taught both in UT and in CA, and as a parent of five children, Common Core is NOT ok...

Governor Herbert created his own NGO called Governor's Education and Excellence Commission in 2010.  He has since renamed his Vision 2020 plan to Prosperity 2020 plan. The Department of Education has an NGO called Equity and Excellence Commission.  Their education blueprints are the same, although one is a Republican and one is a Democrat. 

This is not a Republican or Democrat issue..This is about protecting our children and not allowing a corporate-federal control over our children's data or future in education.  Our children are being used a guinea pigs and are being HURT.

Please read how the Governor is LEADING the push to implement Common Core and its attachments of school/principal/teacher grading (BULLYING), Kindergarten to career data collection (Sec. Arne Duncan calls it cradle to career..but the educational blueprints are the same), high stakes computer adaptive testing leading to data collection, one to one computers that are dangerous in the classroom and not needed, etc..

He is pushing Common Core aligned General Education as well.  It is not enough to push this agenda from K-12, but he wants the indoctrination and dumbing down to continue into the University level.  Yes, I am calling it dumbing down.  Common Core is NOT internationally benchmarked as the authors proclaim.  My children are caught in the middle of this radical takeover.  

I have researched the standards and they are LOWER than what we had before we adopted them.  Also, I don't agree with getting rid of rich moral literature for duel indoctrination informational text and stressing opinion writing.  This is plain wrong! To see what books are on our children's AP Literature list, is astonishing! 

My oldest just graduated from high school last year and he was able to complete both AP CALC and AP STATS...but my other three boys are forced to enter into this false claim of becoming "career and college ready" by learning integrative math and not completely covering needed topics for them to be ready to take AP CALC after Secondary Math 3 Honors.  Pre-Calc is only covered 70% in Sec. Math 3 Honors so there is a huge gap in their math education, which is drastically different than what my oldest went through the last 4 years.  Our children will be LESS "career and college ready"!

In researching the K-3rd grade standards, they are NOT written with child development in mind.  I have a 5 year old that will be caught in this area of the standards. It boggles my mind that anyone could come up with these standards for these ages....they certainly haven't taken any child psychology classes or had children of their own!

The new SAGE testing from AIR, is a crime.  I have read the changed FERPA law and AIR's contracts and my children's data is NOT safe, as Judy Parks proclaims. In the past, CTR's were given no name, only aggregate information was shared.  Local Utah teachers wrote the tests, proctored the tests, could know what were in the tests, corrected the tests and gave the results to the local schools, then local school districts and then to the state.  From there, they were shared Federally.  

Now, it is opposite and top-down and radical.  Student information is disaggregate and AIR, who prides themselves with leading social change through computer adaptive testing and is a psychometric research company that can legally ask for "student behavior" and on the contract it also says psychometric testing, is writing, proctoring and correcting the tests.  Our students are logging onto a Washington, DC server when on the SAGE Portal and any data becomes unsafe due to the FERPA law being changed unconstitutionally.  These SAGE test scores, with names, are given to the State and local districts and then to the teacher, all without anyone ever really seeing what each student took, as the test is adaptive and each student has a different test.  I have real problems with this type of testing in light of the trillions that can be made off of data collection.  

As a teacher, there is nothing useful gleamed from these tests.  They only serve to cut off individual creativity and innovation within the classroom.  I knew everyone one of my students and how they were progressing just from my own assignments, projects, and tests.  I don't need some outside source to tell me what my students understand.  This is a waste of money that could be used to lower the teacher-student ratio where real change can take place in the classroom.  

One to one computers would be a crime in our schools.  The push for this again, is for data collection.  It would be difficult for me as teacher, to control what was going on in each device as well as costly to fix, buy software, and to add in protection so that pornography couldn't be hacked into, as in other schools that have one to one computers in other states.  It has become a nightmare for many teachers in classroom management and taken away precious time in meaningful learning activities that touch each child's learning style. 

Also, I would like to see a bill that protects ALL student data and the ability for parents to OPT out of all data collection including SIS (Aspire) or Skyward, which is extracted by UTREx nightly WITHOUT parental consent!  I DO NOT give my permission for my children's data to be shared outside of the teachers classroom! 

Please take the time to see the proof that our Governor is leading this unconstitutional push to take over local control from parents, teachers, and districts in creating innovative differentiated learning environments.  America is number one in innovation in the world.  Our scores would be number one in everything else, if we took out the ELA and Special Ed scores as other countries do when they report their students scores in comparative tests.  

I don't want my children growing up in the pressure cooker of high stakes testing as in the Asian countries I have lived in such as Japan and Taiwan.  Suicide is the number one killer of teens due to these types of tests and career paths chosen for them because of these tests.  

I believe in the American Dream to be able to become anything i want and set a goal to go after, not dependent on a test score.  Please, I'm asking you as a teacher and as a parent to STOP COMMON CORE...it is NOT ok!
