Utah companies landed 85 spots on the annualInc. 5,000 list with total revenues topping $2.9 billion.

The Inc. 5,000 measures the fastest growing private companies over the past three years.

Of the Utah companies on the list, several are technology based, including the recently acquired Goal Zero which came in at number 150 on the list.

HireVue, the digital interview platform, came in at number 335, touting $9.8 million in revenue and 1383 percent growth over the last three years.

We have all heard people say, when they make a decision we don’t like, that “it’s not personal.” Generally they mean “it’s about the facts of the situation, it’s not about who you are as a person.” Usually this is a bit of a fib. In venture capital it’s often a big lie.

We like to say “it’s not personal” because this approach makes it easier for the other person to accept a bad outcome, reducing the risk of a messy, emotional discussion.

Peak Ventures Closes $23 Million Fund to Invest in Utah Startups

Peak Ventures, a Provo-based early stage investment firm and wholly owned subsidiary of Peak Capital Partners, today announced the close of a $23 million venture capital fund.

According to Peak Ventures, the fund will target seed-stage startups in Utah and the Mountain West, and will cut checks to local companies ranging from $100,000 to $1 million.

 

“There is a real need for new capital sources to fund the brightest entrepreneurs in Utah,” said Jeff Burningham, founder and managing partner of Peak Ventures. “We plan to meet that need by focusing on the entrepreneur. In the early days of your startup, it’s about gaining every possible advantage and executing. In essence, we’ve assembled the type of venture firm that we wished would have existed when we were raising capital for our startups.”
