National Health Center Week 2014 (August 10 -16), America’s Health Centers; Local Engines for Healthier Communities, is Here At Last!

After all the hard work Heath Centers have done getting ready, National Health Center Week 2014 (August 10 -16) has finally arrived and it is time to celebrate! At hundreds of events and in hundreds of ways across the country, Health Center staff, board members, patients, community leaders, and other Health Center advocates are applauding the great work that Health Centers do in bringing high-quality, cost effective, and accessible care to millions of patients. National Health Center Week provides an opportunity for Health Centers to showcase the incredible work they do and services they provide to their communities while at the same time advocating for the resources necessary to continue and expand their services. To help you get the most out of your National Health Center Week 2014 effort, here are a few helpful tools and ideas to consider throughout the week

NHCW Talking Points: If your Member of Congress will be participating in your events during NHCW, be prepared to advocate for your center. Get ready for these important visits by downloading these HCW talking points from the NHCW website. Educate elected officials about the value of Health Centers; how health centers create jobs and drive economic activity. Remind decision makers about Health Centers unique business model as locally controlled and operated institutions that are responsive to the community’s needs. And perhaps most importantly, remember to say THANK YOU for their support for Health Centers.

New National Health Center Week Resources: Check out these three brand new NHCW infographics created by the NACHC research team at NACHC: “Providing Quality Care and Producing Results,” “National Economic and Community Impact of Federal Health Center Funding,” and “National Economic and Community Impact of the Health Center Program.” Also, be sure to check out new State Fact Sheets outlining state based data on Health Center Economic & Community Impact.

Media Outreach: Take advantage of the opportunity to highlight the work and contributions of your Health Center during National Health Center Week by reaching out to newspapers, television, radio, and by using social media. This is a powerful way to publicize the impact Health Centers have in your local and state economy, describe and showcase the success stories of your Health Center in caring for patients and the community at large. To help you, the NHCW website’s Media Toolkit has templates – in English and Spanish - for Letters to the Editor, OpEds, Press Releases and more that can be customized to fit your Health Center. Let us know if you need lists of media outlets in your local area and make sure to share any local media coverage you receive by emailing grassroots@nachc.org

NHCW Picture and Video Contest: Don’t forget that the 2014 National Health Center Week Picture and Video Contests (August 1 – 29) are in full swing. This is a great opportunity to show off the success of your Health Center and gain national exposure for your great work. Contest winners will receive  top billing on the NHCW website and inclusion in the 2015 Health Centers Calendar. You don’t need to be a professional photographer or filmmaker (in fact no professional entries will be considered). All you need is some basic equipment, a little creativity, and the cooperation and inspiration of your friends and colleagues. Check out the video and picture contest page of the NHCW website for some tips for winning pictures and videos.

Social Media Hashtags, Badges, and Sample Posts: Use the power of social media to publicize your National Health Center Week events! Be sure to use the hashtag #NHCW2014 with each post and don’t forget to check out the great social media badges and sample posts – in English and Spanish – that can be found on the social media tools page of the NHCW website. Also, if you have a Member of Congress visiting your center, don’t forget to thank them for attending on social media and be sure to post any photos of these visits and other celebrations.

Special Population Days: Remember that each year, three days during NHCW are designated to acknowledge special populations served by Health Centers. This year we celebrate Public Housing Health Centers Day on Tuesday, August 12, Health Care for the Homeless Day on Wednesday, August 13, and Farmworker Health Day on Thursday, August 14.

Save the Date: NHCW TeleForum with HHS Secretary Burwell and Dr. Wakefield, August 13th at 3PM ET! In celebration of NHCW, please join NACHC President and CEO Tom Van Coverden, Secretary of Health and Human Services Sylvia Mathews Burwell, HRSA Administrator Dr. Mary Wakefield as well as Health Center representatives for an exciting call to help celebrate NHCW. The call is scheduled for Wednesday, August 13th at 3PM ETClick here to sign up to receive the call, or dial 1-877-229-8493 and enter PIN 15035 to join the call directly on Wednesday.

This year National Health Center Week is already shaping up to be the biggest and best on record. Part of what makes National Health Center Week a success and enables the celebration to grow each year is the generous support of our sponsors.
