Communicating With State Legislators

2014 Survey of Perceptions of Citizen Advocacy in State Capitols

Sen. Scott K. Jenkins,

I am contacting you to respectfully request your participation in the first comprehensive survey of it's kind: Communicating with State Legislators - 2014 Survey of Perceptions of Citizen Advocacy in State Capitols.

As we've worked to eliminate "bad advocacy" through education and the smart use of technology in advocacy campaigns, we've found that significant misperceptions exist between constituents, interest groups, and state legislators as to what constitutes "good advocacy" vs. "bad advocacy," which techniques are viewed more positively by state legislators and their staff, and even which advocacy methods should NEVER be employed.  Rapid technological change with email and social media seems to have only exacerbated the misperceptions and your participation in our survey can really help all involved.

With a belief that much improvement can be made through mutual understanding, we have undertaken this survey of ALL Senators and Representatives/Delegates in ALL state capitols in order to pierce through the misunderstandings and improve citizen advocacy.  Survey results are anonymous and will be aggregated and analyzed to provide insights to the public as to the most effective ways to engage their elected legislators - and which techniques to avoid.  We believe that the results of this survey should also help your office by giving you insight into how other state legislators in your state and across the country engage constituents and even eventually lead to a decrease in the "bad advocacy" that disrupts the work of you and your staff.

I certainly understand that you have quite a busy schedule and participating in this survey likely ranks lower on your list than addressing pressing constituent concerns.  In the case that you are unable to complete the survey yourself, please delegate a trusted member of your staff to complete the survey for you.

Your participation is valued and greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

-Best Regards
