I would like to ask you to oppose HB 96, the Utah School Readiness Bill.

I do not believe we should be spending money or legislating preschool.  We should not track children, which this bill would necessarily have to require us to do.  Head Start, according to many studies, has been proven to either be of mixed effectiveness.  The Institute of Marriage and Family has found that we should actually begin educating children later, not earlier.  I have many concerns with this bill.  Honestly, I believe that what is happening is that we are legislating in an effort to take care of our children.  Yet really – we should be putting much more effort into keeping mothers and fathers available to have the time and income so that they can provide their own resources for their children.  We are fixing the wrong problem, in many respects.

Here are some sites with information that I have used to make my decision on this bill.  Thank you for your time and consideration.  In my experience, it is impossible to get rid of an idea that becomes a law.  If we are in any way not fully convinced that it’s absolutely necessary, and totally right, let’s not let that bill pass.
