Honorable Representatives, My father attended the first "Speed Week" on the Bonneville Salt Flats in 1949 and participated every year until he passed away. For over two decades he made the 700+ mile journey from Southern California to pursue his passion of racing on the World's premier race course. As a kid, little did I suspect that one day I would open a business and raise my family in Brigham City, Utah and then retire to Rockville, Utah. My family and I have continued to follow my father's dream and in 2001 with my brothe,r Don Vesco, driving my streamlined race car we were able to set the World's Fastest Wheel Driven record at 458 MPH! Our record still holds to this day. In my nearly 50 years of living in our beautiful state I have had the honor and privilege of working with Governor Leavitt's Utah Trail Machine Association and the Bureau of Land Management's Public Land group. Both these groups promoted safe and responsible use of public lands and developed guidelines to protect Utah's treasures. Along with thousands of land speed racers around the world I am alarmed at the deteriorated condition the historic Bonneville Salt Flats are now in. The Utah Alliance was formed eighteen months ago to give a local voice to the larger "Save the Salt" effort and to formulate a plan to restore the flats to safe, racing conditions. We have met with the Governor's office as well as Utah's Federal Congressional Delegation. No one wants to see the salt flats disappear and yet it is happening. We have become weary of the BLM's desire to "study" the BSF one more time before they take any action. The good news is that the salt that has been removed is still out there. We are developing a comprehensive plan which will "restore" the salt back onto the flats on the north side of I-80. We ask you to support HCR 8 which will urge the BLM to work with us and bring the BSF International Speedway to safe land speed racing conditions. Sincerely, Rick Vesco Rockville, Ut.
