Dear Utah House Representative,

This is regarding S.B. 0163 Kindergarten Age Exception Amendments.

Our family strongly supports this bill.
This bill would help expand and encourage child to learn. As current law stands to enter kindergarten you must be 5 years old on or before September 1st.
Our child turns 5 years old on the 9th of September. Currently they have to WAIT until next year (2016 -2017) for kindergarten! For a child that loves to learn and that has taken preschool classes, this is hard to swallow. This child is ready for the next step in life. This child knows how to hold a pencil correctly, write their name, can count to 30, recites alphabet from memory, knows days of the weeks, months of the year, seasons, can sound out letters, knows capital and lower case letters. Do we need to continue on?
Why does our child have to wait for kindergarten? Oh we forgot, they were born on the 9th of September.
One of our biggest concerns is that our schools / legislation is hindering our child’s love to learn. What will happen in this next year to this child? will they get bored with preschool, being taught the same things again and again? What kind of message are we sending to our kids?
My question with the current law to enter Kindergarten you must be 5 on our before September 1st, do you really think that the 8 days after the 1st of September makes my or any child not ready for school? Is that some magic date that says any child is not academically ready or not qualified enough for school?
Please move the birth date to December 31st and give the school districts the chance to test children into kindergarten. Passing this bill would give our child the chance to learn and grow. You never know they could be our next president of the United States of America. If we do not give our children the chance to learn when they are young and ready, we are only hurting our self’s as a country.
Remember children are our future!

Sincerely,

Concerned parents for a better education.
