Subject: Please Vote NO on "Billboards-Get-Access-to-Utah's-Scenic-Byways" (HB 407 S1)
Date: Wed Mar 04 16:34:06 MST 2015
Dear Utah State Representatives,
I am strongly opposed to Utah Rep. Mike Noel's "Billboards-Get-Access-to-Utah's-Scenic-Byways" (HB 407 S1).
Six years ago, I drove the Scenic Byway 12 (SR-12) through Garfield and Wayne Counties on my first trip through Utah. I was stunned by the pristine beauty of the views, and by the love that Utahns have for the land, as evidenced by the protections they sought for the exquisite experience of driving Highway 12. The vistas that opened without obstruction from Panguich to Torrey were an inspiring treasure that called me to make my home here. Within a year of that one trip (one trip!) I had moved to Wayne County. I now live, work (supported by excellent high-speed online) and spend most of my income in Wayne County Utah, and that's the way it's going to be for the rest of my life.
I am also the administrator for a non-profit organization that runs programs bringing 60-100 people per year from all over the world to experience the timeless beauty of unspoiled wilderness in spiritual retreats in Utah. We frequently take our program participants on the same drive that so inspired me just a few years ago. We attract people from all over the US, Canada, Europe and South America because it it so awesomely beautiful here. It is common for our program participants to extend their stays in Utah for the same reason that I decided to move here. There are no vistas like Utah's anywhere else in the world.
Our program participants spend money -- on hotels, meals, guides, gas, rental cars, and in the local shops where they find hard-working people offering their best hospitality and service. They enjoy the discovery of our local treasures, without the insane clutter that fills their lives everywhere else they go. As an organization, we enjoy telling our participants about where to find the Flute Shop on Route 12, or how to contact the best mechanics in Wayne County. They look to us for recommendations on where to say, and where the best pizza in town can be found. They ask us - they don't look for roadside advertising. They go home and tell their friends of the miracle that is Utah, in all its scenic glory and natural dignity. And they come back again and again.
Billboards are annoying, obstructive, and frankly insane on a road as beautiful as Highway 12. Please stop this money-grab by the billboard interests, represented by Mike Noel. He does not represent my view, which I would like to have taken into account as much as those who have lobbied him and you for their own benefit.
Open space, distant views, unrestricted access to beauty - that is our birthright. God-given. Don't let Rep. Noel and his values destroy the reason I came to Utah.
Thank you for your attention and your actions on behalf of the people of Utah. Please do the right thing and vote NO on HB 407 S1.
