Feb 11, 2014 Representative David Lifferth State Capitol, Suite 350 350 North State Street Salt Lake City, UT 84114 Dear Representative Lifferth, I am writing to ask that you support school readiness and vote YES on HB96. I have worked with children from low-income neighborhoods since I was 18 years old and I have seen first hand how devastating it can be to educators and the school system when students enter kindergarten lacking the basic skills needed to be prepared. Not ONLY does it effect the child who isn't equipped with those basic skills such as being able to write their name, counting to 10, recognizing letters, etc, but it puts the entire class behind in order to catch them up! So even those parents who are taking the time to read with their students every night and preparing their students for Kindergarten are still missing out on up to 6 weeks of kindergarten education because half of their classmates are behind. In many cases, it's not even the parents fault. If I am a single mother, working 2, and in some cases 3, jobs to support my children I just don't have the time to give my child what they need to be prepared. All of my time is invested in earning enough money to put food on the table and pay the bills. And in most cases, it is an older sibling, who let's face it, isn't much older themselves, stepping in to help parent. There is a real gap here that affects everyone in this state but it can start to be filled by voting YES on HB96. I absolutely support high-quality preschool and I am hoping for your support as well. Thank you so much for your time. Sincerely, Miss Stephanie Linton 13082 S 2950 W Riverton, UT 84065-1359 (801) 455-2774
