Speaker Lockhart:

This is the only letter I have ever written to a state legislator.

It seems to me to have been seriously inappropriate for you to use your position of Speaker of the House to promote your own political agenda.  I refer specifically to your attack on Governor Herbert in what were supposed to be your opening remarks to the Utah House of Representatives, no doubt a prelude to your declaring yourself a candidate for governor.

Now you have put Governor Herbert in the position of having to respond in opposition to you and his other critics, creating factions within the Utah State government and the Republican Party, a sign of decadence and decay.  And make no mistake: you are going to be held responsible for the infighting and degradation of partisan politics in this state.

Utahns are not particularly drawn to rank disloyalty.  I hope someone within your own party challenges your position as speaker in this very session of the House.  I will support that candidate.

I would appreciate a written response to this letter, which would indicate civility and responsibility on your part.  I wonder if I will receive one.

Without much respect for your behavior,
