Moses And the Utah Caucus System
The first Representative form of government - Exodus 18:17-23
Exodus 18:21 Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.
God’s government as established by Moses is a government of local representatives. There are captains of tens, and fifties, and hundreds and thousands. These represent their respected groups in higher and higher councils. This is not a new system created by Utah, it is a system used by Israel and by our Saxon ancestors and it is a representative system similar to the system put in place by our founding fathers.
In Utah we call our system a caucus system. In this system, neighbors meet and elect representatives based on values similar to those Moses recommended for such leaders. We search diligently for honest men and wise men and good men. We know these men because they are our neighbors. We examine their views in our neighborhood caucus meetings. The delegates we elect from these neighborhood caucus meetings are then charged with the responsibility of studying the many candidates for federal, state and county offices and selecting the candidates who most closely represent the values of their constituents, their neighbors. Those elected by the delegates then run in the general election.
How is this caucus system better than a purely democratic system where every state citizen votes?

Why would Thomas Jefferson claim that a democratic vote can end in tyranny/mob rule? In a system where each citizen votes tyranny is easily implemented by conspiring individuals. There are many ways this is accomplished but all end with the same result, the loss of freedom and in our case, the lose of all the rights guaranteed in our constitution and our bill of rights. In such a system people can purchase massive media campaigns and basically buy the election. People from outside the state can use their popularity and money to enter the state and become our elected representatives or senators i.e. Hillary Clinton in New York. Powerful people can conspire with one another to obtain each others support and convince the less politically educated masses to vote for them. Tyrants can use flattering words and make false promises to the people through the media to gain power. Politicians can buy the votes of the people by creating more and more social programs which in the end will destroy the very people they are supposed to help. All of these politicians will use the media to reach the people in order to gain the popular vote.
The greatest danger comes after such ungodly men are elected. These men will sell their souls to gain power. Because we already have many such men in government, we find ourselves in a constant struggle to maintain the rights of families, freedom of religion, free of speech, gun rights, health care, equal protection under the rule of law, limited government, states rights, the separation of powers, the rights of the unborn, freedom in education, unconstitutional czars, a senate that refuses to hear legislation passed by the house, a president who continually uses executive orders to execute law and the list goes on and on and on.
The protection we have from such men at the state level is the caucus system. We choose honorable men at the neighborhood level and they choose honorable men to run for office. Should we lose this system, we will eventually be at the mercy of tyrants.
