Dear Representative: I urge you to pass HB 342 and allow, even mandate, Utah to develop their own standards for curriculum in our state. As an owner of a private math instruction center, I see every day the confusion and frustration that students and teachers both are feeling about the math core that has been forced upon them. One of my biggest concerns about any curriculum has been the top down approach to teaching. The teachers should be the ones who decide how to teach. That is why we hire them. If we are chained to set of mandated standards that everyone must teach in the same way, we might as well have a video presentation in every classroom and do away with teachers altogether. With no ability to change the curriculum, and mandated testing increasing the pressure on teachers to teach to the test, we are losing the best teachers to mindless, un-creative teaching that is a huge disservice to our children. Please pass this bill and support a yes vote in the full house. Thank you, Mark T Minson Mathnasium Learning Centers
