There is one week left in the legislative session, and a lot of work still to be done. Our top two priorities still need your support! It is critical that lawmakers hear from you regarding HB96: Utah School Readiness Initiative and United Way 2-1-1. Please see the Action Alerts listed in the Advocacy section of this newsletter for more information.

Increasing Parent Engagement in South Salt Lake!

KidsIncreasing parent engagement is a key contributor to academic success for all students, and a goal of many of our Community Schools. Schools in South Salt Lake, along with numerous dedicated partners, have been committed to determining how to increase parent engagement. Recently in South Salt Lake, a group of Community Schools, parents, and various partner organizations, formed the South Salt Lake Parent Engagement Committee, and have been engaged in regular conversations regarding this issue and how it impacts academic outcomes of students in the community.Want to know how they are changing the odds and getting parents involved?

    United Way 2-1-1 Volunteer Center provides the best volunteer opportunities for individuals, youth, families, and groups in Davis, Salt Lake, Summit, and Tooele Counties.

    Upcoming Volunteer Opportunities

    Granger Elementary Kindergarten Round Up! (West Valley)
    Volunteers are needed to help at Granger Elementary’s first Kindergarten Round Up on March 7, 2014. Volunteers will help with school registration, run craft booths and activities for small children, and give translation assistance (Spanish). Ten to 15 volunteers are needed between 2:00–4:30 p.m. Contact Amy Worthington at amy@uw.org or 801.746.2566.
     
    Kearns Jr High Homework Help/Tutoring (Kearns)
    Kearns Junior is having a make-up day for students who have incomplete grades. Twenty volunteers are needed to work one-on-one with students to complete missing homework assignments. Shift lengths are flexible. Volunteers needed between 8:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon on March 21, 2014. Volunteers must be 18 years-old. Contact Amy Worthington at amy@uw.org or 801.746.2566.
     
    Lincoln Elementary Homework Power Hour (South Salt Lake)
    Four volunteers are needed every afternoon Monday-Thursday to assist students with Homework Power Hour from 3:00-4:00 p.m. Homework help is needed in elementary math and language arts. Volunteers may also be used for enrichment activities from 4:00 -5:30 p.m. Volunteers are requested to come for at least one hour per week. Contact Craig Foster at craig@uw.org or 801.554.2005.
