Members of the Utah State Central Committee, of which I'm a member, are assembling this morning to elect three candidates for Attorney General to be appointed by the Governor to serve until the 2014 election.
I would ask that you consider those candidates that will not only bring integrity to the office, but those that best represent first our core conservative values of strong family and individual liberty, who know the U.S. Constitution and understand the value of executing the law using originalist principles.
Models in the U.S. Supreme Court who most demostrate their commitment to that rule of law are Justices Sam Alito and Clarence Thomas.
Also, keep in mind that the Attorney General does not represent the Governor. The Governor's office already has legal counsel. The AG represents the people and our interests in the State of Utah.
An Attorney General must be willing to take our state laws and bills passed by the state legislature and defend them, sometimes against the interests of the Federal government or interpretations that do not meet originalist ideals.
That person must be strong enough to do what is right in the face of federal over-reach and defend Article I Section 8 of the U.S. Constitution.
We know we are in precarious times and that the Obama Administration, in collaboration with the Democrats and unfortunately some Republicans, is acting outside the purview of the U.S. Constitution, at times disregarding it entirely. How will our next Attorney General represent us against that lawlessness?
It is my hope that we will look for the top three who you believe will best help our state negotiate through the mine fields of the current movement toward a single payer in health care, the federal control of education, the takeover of our land and resources, the new challenges of privacy and neglect of our 4th Amendment rights, as well as a person who values our First Amendment rights.
I look forward to seeing you this morning.
