The American Medical Society for Sports Medicine is the largest organization of sports medicine physicians in the United States, with members in all 50 states serving as teamphysicians at every level, from high school to professional and Olympic sports teams. In 2013, we are pleased to return to the National Conference of State Legislatures' Legislative Summit.
Of the more than 150 exhibitors at the summit, we do offer a unique opportunity: to interact with on-site medical doctors, each board-certified in sports medicine.During the established exhibitor hours, our physicians will be available to you to discuss healthcare policy or even discuss clinical questions you might have. Make sure to stop by and take advantage of this opportunity. If you have a specific healthcare policy or clinical question that you would like to discuss, please reply to this e-mail with your question, and we will ensure that someone is available during the conference to speak to you specifically about your area of interest.
Briefly, our organization is focusing on three cost-neutral policy priorities for the upcoming legislative season:
- Legislation promoting placement of automated defibrillators owned by schools or youth sporting organizations within a minute of the physical location that athletes are competing. This bill would not mandate purchase of AEDs, but seeks instead to maximize effectiveness of equipment already purchased.
- Legislation mandating that cardiac pre-participation clearance only be performed by a physician, Physician's Assistant or Certified Nurse Practitioner.
- Legislation to ensure that third party payers who cover rehabilitation services do so for certified athletic trainers whose clinical practice acts list injury rehabilitation as a core competency.
See you in Atlanta!
