Dear Representative,
I ask that you pass HB 342 to put Utah on its own higher standards for education that are created by Utahns, for Utahns. I have many concerns with Common Core and its overreach, but my most important reason is that after researching what Common Core is I don't feel it is better educational standards.  Last year my daughter began 7th grade Common Core math, after 2 months of frustration and 10 hours a week helping her understand it we pulled her out and now she learns math at home with an on-line program.  Since I am also a firm believer in the beauty of the English language and values taught in classical literature we teach this subject at home, also. I miss the days when English teachers had flexibility to tailor literature to fit the interests of their classrooms-like reading "Lord of the Rings" because of the movie.  I believe our culture will suffer from these changes, not to mention our value system.
Sincerely,
Tricia Herdt
