Subject: Please pass HB 228 on state board of education elections
Date: Mon Feb 24 15:54:21 MST 2014
Body:
Dear Committee Members,
I strongly urge you to pass HB 228 today.
Like many Utahans I was uninformed as to the selection process of those we vote for on the State School Board.  Education is partisan when money is involved, so let the citizens of Utah decide who determines how our tax dollars are spent via the Utah State School Board.  When the education of Utah's children is in the balance, the people of Utah should have a say who determines that educational fate. Who has the greater vested interest in the children of this great state...the parents or the Utah State School Board?

The State School Board spends close to 50% of Utah's  tax dollars.  To have a board with that much "power", who is accountable to no one, is unacceptable. In my lifetime I would never have voted for a board member who would have signed off on Common Core.  As an educator/parent and grandparent the decision to adopt Common Core was reprehensible.  If the people of Utah had been fully aware of what was at stake, we would never have allowed this. Instead we were not informed, until after the decision had been made.

Having taught for nearly thirty years, I was/am a "victim" so to speak of the shifting tides of education...now I  understand, why the voices of so many teachers and parents are NEVER heard.  We are kind of like gnats on a bull. This needs stop today with the passage of HB 228.
Sincerely,
Heidi Bailey
