             6      A JOINT RESOLUTION OF THE LEGISLATURE PROPOSING TO AMEND THE UTAH
             7      CONSTITUTION; MODIFYING THE TERM OF OFFICE OF EXECUTIVE DEPARTMENT
             8      OFFICERS; DIRECTING THE LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR TO SUBMIT THE PROPOSED
             9      AMENDMENT TO THE VOTERS; MAKING TECHNICAL CHANGES; AND PROVIDING
             10      AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
             11      This resolution proposes to change the Utah Constitution as follows:
             12      AMENDS:
             13          ARTICLE VII, SECTION 1
             14      Be it resolved by the Legislature of the state of Utah, two-thirds of all members elected to each of
             15      the two houses voting in favor thereof:
             16          Section 1. It is proposed to amend Utah Constitution Article VII, Section 1 , to read:
             17           Article VII, Section 1. [Executive Department officers -- Terms, residence, and
             18      duties.]
             19          (1) The elective constitutional officers of the Executive Department shall consist of
             20      Governor, Lieutenant Governor, State Auditor, State Treasurer, and Attorney General.
             21          (2) Each officer shall:
             22          (a) hold office [for four years] beginning on the first Monday of January next after [their]
             23      the officer's election;
             24          (b) during [their terms] the officer's term of office reside within the state; and
             25          (c) perform such duties as are prescribed by this Constitution and as provided by statute.
             26          (3) The term of office of each officer shall be four years, except that the term of office of
             27      each officer elected in the year 2004 shall be two years.


             28          Section 2. Submittal to voters.
             29          The lieutenant governor is directed to submit this proposed amendment to the voters of the
             30      state at the next regular general election in the manner provided by law.
             31          Section 3. Effective date.
             32          If the amendment proposed by this joint resolution is approved by a majority of those
             33      voting on it at the next regular general election, the amendment shall take effect on January 1,
             34      2001.
