General Description:

This bill modifies commemorative days observed in Utah.

Highlighted Provisions:

This bill:

. adds as an annual commemorative day observed in Utah, Juneteenth Independence
14
Day, on the third Saturday in June, in honor of the day freedom was proclaimed to
15
all slaves in the south; and
16
. makes technical changes.

Be it enacted by the Legislature of the state of Utah:

Section 1.
Section
63-13-5.6
is amended to read:

63-13-5.6. Commemorative days.

(1) The following days shall be commemorated yearly:
29
(a) Bill of Rights Day, on December 15;
30
(b) Constitution Day, on September 17;
31
(c) Yellow Ribbon Day, on the third Monday in May, in honor of men and women who
32
are serving or have served in the U.S. armed forces around the world in defense of freedom;
33
[and]
34
(d) POW/MIA Recognition Day, on the third Friday in September[.];
35
(e) Indigenous People Day, the Monday immediately preceding Thanksgiving[.]; and
36
(f) Juneteenth Independence Day, on the third Saturday in June, in honor of the day
37
freedom was proclaimed to all slaves in the south by Union General Gordon Granger, on June
38
19, 1865 in Galveston, Texas.

(2) The Division of Veterans Affairs shall coordinate activities, special programs, and
40
promotional information to heighten public awareness and involvement relating to Subsections
41
(1)(c) and (d).

(3) The month of November shall be commemorated yearly as American Indian
43
Heritage Month.
