     LONG TITLE
     General Description:
         This joint resolution of the Legislature calls upon the Utah Attorney General to join
     with Attorneys General in other states in an effort to prohibit the distribution or
     exhibition of overly violent video games to minors.
     Highlighted Provisions:
         This resolution:
         .    calls upon the Utah Attorney General and all Attorneys General from the various
     states to actively join in the defense of statutes enacted by other states which are
     already in litigation and which are designed to prohibit the distribution or exhibition
     of overly violent video games to minors; and
         .    calls upon the Utah Attorney General to monitor the ongoing development of these
     laws throughout the nation, both in courts and in legislative halls, so that Utah's
     voice may be heard in the fight against overly violent video games.
     Special Clauses:
         None

     Be it resolved by the Legislature of the state of Utah:
         WHEREAS, there is a growing consensus within the social sciences that exposure to

     violent media increases aggression;
         WHEREAS, empirical evidence regarding the negative effects of violent video games
     is overwhelming;
         WHEREAS, the American Psychological Association has called for cuts in the level of
     violence in video games in an attempt to reduce their negative effects; and
         WHEREAS, despite research and calls for a reduction of the level of violence in video
     games, the violence in video games sold to minors continues to escalate:
         NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of the state of Utah calls
     upon the Utah Attorney General and all Attorneys General from the various states to actively
     join in the defense of statutes enacted by other states which are already in litigation and which
     are designed to prohibit the distribution or exhibition of overly violent video games to minors.
         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature of the state of Utah calls upon the
     Utah Attorney General to monitor the ongoing development of these laws throughout the
     nation, both in courts and in legislative halls, with the end design of having Utah's voice heard
     in the fight against overly violent video games and their sordid progeny.
         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be sent to the Attorneys
     General of each state in the United States, and to the members of Utah's congressional
