General Description:

This joint resolution of the Legislature calls upon the Utah Attorney General to join
12
with Attorneys General in other states in an effort to prohibit the distribution or
13
exhibition of overly violent video games to minors.

Highlighted Provisions:

This resolution:

. calls upon the Utah Attorney General and all Attorneys General from the various
17
states to actively join in the defense of statutes enacted by other states which are
18
already in litigation and which are designed to prohibit the distribution or exhibition
19
of overly violent video games to minors; and
20
. calls upon the Utah Attorney General to monitor the ongoing development of these
21
laws throughout the nation, both in courts and in legislative halls, so that Utah's
22
voice may be heard in the fight against overly violent video games.

Be it resolved by the Legislature of the state of Utah:

WHEREAS, there is a growing consensus within the social sciences that exposure to
28
violent media increases aggression;
29
WHEREAS, empirical evidence regarding the negative effects of violent video games
30
is overwhelming;

WHEREAS, the American Psychological Association has called for cuts in the level of
32
violence in video games in an attempt to reduce their negative effects; and

WHEREAS, despite research and calls for a reduction of the level of violence in video
34
games, the violence in video games sold to minors continues to escalate:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of the state of Utah calls
36
upon the Utah Attorney General and all Attorneys General from the various states to actively
37
join in the defense of statutes enacted by other states which are already in litigation and which
38
are designed to prohibit the distribution or exhibition of overly violent video games to minors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature of the state of Utah calls upon the
40
Utah Attorney General to monitor the ongoing development of these laws throughout the
41
nation, both in courts and in legislative halls, with the end design of having Utah's voice heard
42
in the fight against overly violent video games and their sordid progeny.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be sent to the Attorneys
44
General of each state in the United States, and to the members of Utah's congressional
45
delegation.
