General Description:

This bill establishes a printing office under the direction of the State Board of

Education.

This bill appropriates:

. as an ongoing appropriation subject to future budget constraints, $1,400,000 from

the Education Fund for fiscal year 2008-09 to the State Board of Education.

Be it enacted by the Legislature of the state of Utah:

Section 1.
Section
53A-1-304
is enacted to read:

53A-1-304. Printing office.
32
(1) The State Board of Education shall establish a printing office.
33
(2) The printing office may:
34
(a) produce, print, and distribute original materials that support and enhance the
35
instruction of the core curriculum in the state's public schools, including:
36
(i) workbooks and worksheets; and
37
(ii) textbooks;
38
(b) contract to print and distribute materials that a school district, charter school, or
39
private source has produced;
40
(c) charge public schools the reasonable costs of distributed materials; and
41
(d) seek input from school districts, charter schools, educators, and parents regarding
42
the development of materials.

(3) (a) The first priority of the printing office shall be the production of materials for
44
kindergarten through grade three.
45
(b) The second priority of the printing office shall be the production of materials for
46
grades four through six.

Section 2. Appropriation.

As an ongoing appropriation subject to future budget constraints, there is appropriated
49
from the Education Fund for fiscal year 2008-09, $1,400,000 to the State Board of Education to
50
fund the establishment of a printing office in accordance with the provisions of Section
51
53A-1-304
.

Section 3. Effective date.
53
This bill takes effect on July 1, 2008.
