General Description:

This bill establishes resident admission requirements for the University of Utah medical

school.

Be it enacted by the Legislature of the state of Utah:

Section 1.
Section
53B-17-901
is enacted to read:

Part 9. Medical School

53B-17-901. Medical school -- Definitions -- Resident admission requirements.

(1) As used in this section:
29
(a) "Parent" means a student's biological or adoptive parent.
30
(b) "Resident student" means a student who meets the definition of resident student
31
provided under Section
53B-8-102
and:
32
(i) has at least one parent who, for at least six years prior to the student's application:
33
(A) has been domiciled in this state; and
34
(B) claimed the student as a dependent on the parent's tax returns; and
35
(ii) meets at least two of the following conditions:

(A) the student attended high school in this state at least one year;
37
(B) the student or at least one of the student's parents own real property in this state;

and
39
(C) the student has maintained continuous Utah residency status and paid income taxes
40
in this state for at least six years.

(2) At least 75% of the students in an entering class at the University of Utah medical
42
school shall be resident students.

(3) A student whose parents are deceased shall be considered to meet the requirements
44
under Subsection (1)(b)(i) if the student is not claimed as a dependent on the tax returns of a
45
person who is not a resident of Utah.
