General Description:

This joint resolution of the Legislature encourages the Governor to consider statewide
12
geographic balance when making future gubernatorial appointments.

This resolution:

. encourages the Governor to consider, among other factors, achieving an increased
16
statewide geographic balance when determining membership in making future
17
committee, board, and commission appointments.

Be it resolved by the Legislature of the state of Utah:
22
WHEREAS, participation in government by citizens from all regions of the state
23
encourages understanding of the unique needs and perspectives of all citizens while also forging
24
common bonds through public service;
25
WHEREAS, there are many significant ways in which citizens from across the state
26
contribute their time and effort for the betterment of Utah as a whole;
27
WHEREAS, one way to recognize the significance of including citizens throughout the
28
state in serving the public is through membership on state committees, boards, and
29
commissions;
30
WHEREAS, geographic representation, as reflected in the membership of these state
31
entities, suggests that the varied perspectives of Utahns are heard and are recognized as playing
32
an essential role in the development of public policy in Utah;
33
WHEREAS, in some cases, the membership of state committees, boards, and
34
commissions does not reflect the broad, geographic spectrum of the state of Utah;
35
WHEREAS, the Legislature, in filling its appointments to state entities, has worked to
36
reflect the varied geographic interests of the state; and
37
WHEREAS, the citizens of the state benefit greatly as Utah's wide geographic range of
38
interests and perspectives are included in the political process:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of the state of Utah
40
encourages the Governor to give added consideration to geographic balance when making
41
future gubernatorial appointments to the state's committees, boards, and commissions.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be sent to Governor
43
Huntsman.
