General Description:

This joint resolution of the Legislature recognizes the 100th anniversary of the Utah
12
League of Cities and Towns.

This resolution:

. recognizes the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Utah League of Cities and
16
Towns and its efforts to promote civic responsibility and community interest during
17
the past 100 years.

Be it resolved by the Legislature of the state of Utah:
22
WHEREAS, the Utah League of Cities and Towns was created in 1907 as the Utah
23
Municipal League to protect the interests of municipalities in Utah and to promote an active
24
interest in municipal affairs;
25
WHEREAS, the Utah League of Cities and Towns was the ninth such state league
26
created in the United States and was one of the earliest members of the National League of
27
Cities;
28
WHEREAS, one of the primary functions of the Utah League of Cities and Towns
29
during its early years was to organize and facilitate an annual convention, which remains a key
30
function of the Utah League of Cities and Towns;
31
WHEREAS, nearly 1,000 elected officials and staff from municipalities across the state
32
of Utah attend the Utah League of Cities and Towns Convention each year;
33
WHEREAS, when the Utah League of Cities and Towns was formed, there were
34
375,000 residents of Utah and 83 municipalities;
35
WHEREAS, nearly 2,700,000 people now call Utah home, with a large majority living
36
in its 244 cities and towns across the state;
37
WHEREAS, in 1937, the Utah League of Cities and Towns reorganized, employed a
38
full-time staff, expanded its legislative activity, and launched training and other service
39
programs;
40
WHEREAS, the Utah League of Cities and Towns strives to maintain a strong unity
41
and to promote common interests among all Utah municipalities while recognizing each city's
42
and town's uniqueness;
43
WHEREAS, the Utah League of Cities and Towns helped to secure the bid, organize,
44
and host the successful XIX Olympic Winter Games in 2002, and also helped to promote a
45
vision of the Olympic Games throughout the region;
46
WHEREAS, as the Utah League of Cities and Towns enters its second century of
47
service, it remains committed to representing the interests of municipal governments with a
48
strong, unified voice at the state and federal levels; and
49
WHEREAS, the Utah League of Cities and Towns is also committed to providing
50
information, training, and technical assistance to the leaders of the cities and towns of Utah as
51
they strive to make life better for all Utahns:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of the state of Utah
53
recognizes the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Utah League of Cities and Towns.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature recognizes the Utah League of
55
Cities and Towns' efforts to promote civic responsibility and community interest during the
56
past 100 years.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be sent to the Utah League
58
of Cities and Towns.
