LONG TITLE

General Description:

This concurrent resolution of the Legislature and the Governor recognizes the 100 year
12
anniversary of McKay-Dee Hospital.

Highlighted Provisions:

This resolution:
15
. recognizes the 100th anniversary of McKay-Dee Hospital and the tremendous
16
contribution the hospital, and those who have guided it through the years, have
17
made to the citizens of the state of Utah.

Be it resolved by the Legislature of the state of Utah, the Governor concurring therein:
22
WHEREAS, McKay-Dee Hospital and its predecessors have offered 100 years of
23
continuous healthcare service to the residents of Northern Utah;
24
WHEREAS, entities that continue to offer service to the residents of Utah after 100
25
years have created a foundation for the success of Utah and its residents;
26
WHEREAS, tens of thousands of hardworking individuals have devoted a part of their
27
lives to the care and healing of patients at the three hospitals that have become Intermountain
28
McKay-Dee Hospital and Medical Center;
29
WHEREAS, hundreds of thousands of Utah residents have received medical care
30
during McKay-Dee's 100 years of service;
31
WHEREAS, Annie Taylor Dee opened the Dee Hospital in Ogden in 1910 after the
32
tragic loss of her husband and son, due in part to the lack of formal hospital care, with the hope
33
that others would not experience the same loss as her family's;
34
WHEREAS, David O. McKay, first in his role as an LDS Apostle when the LDS
35
Church assumed ownership of the hospital in 1915, and later as President of the Church,
36
provided leadership and helped the Hospital move into its second home at 3939 Harrison
37
Boulevard;
38
WHEREAS, David O. McKay shared Annie's commitment to a first rate hospital for
39
residents of Northern Utah;
40
WHEREAS, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints owned and operated
41
McKay-Dee Hospital until 1976 when it divested hospital operations with the creation of
42
Intermountain Healthcare as a not-for-profit, community-based hospital system with the charge
43
to become a model of healthcare excellence;
44
WHEREAS, for 100 years, McKay-Dee Hospital has fulfilled Annie Taylor Dee's
45
dream of access to high quality healthcare for the residents of Northern Utah;
46
WHEREAS, McKay-Dee Hospital provides millions of dollars in charity care each
47
year;
48
WHEREAS, in this and other ways, McKay-Dee Hospital's contribution to the
49
community at large transcends healthcare and recognizes a responsibility to provide safety net
50
healthcare services, community support, and healing for life to the residents of Northern Utah,
51
regardless of ability to pay;
52
WHEREAS, the first McKay-Dee Hospital was built before antibiotics, blood-type
53
matching, and transfusion technology, when oxygen therapy was still delivered by placing tents
54
over patients' beds and premature babies rarely survived;
55
WHEREAS, progress came one piece of equipment and one step in technique at a time,
56
each year building on the last;
57
WHEREAS, the third McKay-Dee Hospital, built in 2002, offers state-of-the-art
58
medical care to the residents of Northern Utah;
59
WHEREAS, each time a new state-of-the-art facility or device has been needed,
60
funding has been provided, sometimes through debt, sometimes through philanthropy,
61
sometimes from the operations of the hospital, but each time the result of not-for-profit
62
community governance from committed board members exercising stewardship over this
63
extraordinary set of assets, up to and including the current Intermountain McKay-Dee Hospital
64
Center;
65
WHEREAS, every Dee, McKay, and McKay-Dee facility has been a miracle of
66
top-notch medical technology for its day; and
67
WHEREAS, Annie Taylor Dee's dream for a McKay-Dee Hospital continues to find
68
fulfillment as articulated in the words of state and national leaders, including President Barack
69
Obama and former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, who recently recognized
70
Intermountain Healthcare as a national model for healthcare:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of the state of Utah, the
72
Governor concurring therein, recognize the 100th anniversary of the McKay-Dee Hospital and
73
the tremendous contribution that the hospital, and those who have guided it through the years,
74
have made to the citizens of the state of Utah.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be sent to the
76
Intermountain Mckay-Dee Hospital and Medical Center.
