             7      LONG TITLE
             8      General Description:
             9          This concurrent resolution of the Legislature and the Governor expresses support for
             10      Dixie State College's plan for achieving university status.
             11      Highlighted Provisions:
             12          This resolution:
             13          .    expresses support for Dixie State College's plan, as presented to the Utah State
             14      Board of Regents, for achieving university status.
             15      Special Clauses:
             16          None

             18      Be it resolved by the Legislature of the state of Utah, the Governor concurring therein:
             19          WHEREAS, Dixie State College, known at the time as St. George Academy, was
             20      founded in 1911 by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints;
             21          WHEREAS, the state of Utah retained ownership in 1933 with the understanding that
             22      no appropriation would be made that year due to the economic impact of the Great Depression;
             23          WHEREAS, two years later, the first state appropriation was made, and the state has
             24      supported the growth and expansion of the college through the subsequent decades;
             25          WHEREAS, in 2000, the Utah Legislature granted Dixie State College a name change
             26      and baccalaureate degree status in recognition of its growth;
             27          WHEREAS, during its 100th anniversary, Dixie State College is experiencing


             28      ever-growing enrollment and the need to expand its educational offerings to meet the needs of
             29      its community;
             30          WHEREAS, recognizing the challenges and opportunities presented by this growth,
             31      Dixie State College proposed a plan to transition to a university over the next several years;
             32          WHEREAS, Dixie State College's plan to achieve university status includes broadening
             33      its baccalaureate programs to include physical and social sciences, art, and history; and
             34          WHEREAS, on January 21, 2011, Dixie State College's pathway to university status
             35      was approved by the Utah State Board of Regents:
             36          NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of the state of Utah, the
             37      Governor concurring therein, express their support for Dixie State College's plan, as presented
             38      to the Utah State Board of Regents, for achieving university status.
             39          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be sent to Dixie State
             40      College President Stephen D. Nadauld.
