             9      General Description:
             10          This concurrent resolution of the Legislature and the Governor recognizes the 100th
             11      Anniversary of the Girl Scouts of the USA.
             12      Highlighted Provisions:
             13          This resolution:
             14          .    recognizes the 100th Anniversary of the Girl Scouts of the USA and expresses
             15      appreciation for the leadership, self-esteem, and character building the organization
             16      provides through its dedicated service to the girls and women of Utah.
             17      Special Clauses:
             18          None

             20      Be it resolved by the Legislature of the state of Utah, the Governor concurring therein:
             21          WHEREAS, on March 12, 1912, Juliette "Daisy" Gordon Low assembled 18 girls from
             22      Savannah, Georgia for the first Girl Scout meeting;
             23          WHEREAS, Juliette believed that all girls should be given the opportunity to develop
             24      physically, mentally, and spiritually;
             25          WHEREAS, since that time, Girl Scouts of the USA has become a recognized leader in
             26      innovative development programs for girls and young women;
             27          WHEREAS, since 1912, Girl Scouts of the USA has been helping girls build courage,


             28      confidence, and character while developing skills that serve the common good;
             29          WHEREAS, through Girl Scouting, girls discover their strengths as they explore their
             30      world, connect with others to understand the needs of their community, and take action to make
             31      the world a better place;
             32          WHEREAS, on March 12, 2012, Girl Scouts of the USA will celebrate a legacy of 100
             33      years of leadership, and has many exciting events planned to reflect Girl Scouts as the voice of
             34      and for girls;
             35          WHEREAS, the advent of this important milestone provides a unique opportunity to
             36      not only reflect on the tremendous contributions the Girl Scouts of the USA have made over
             37      the past 100 years, but also to rally support for the next century of Girl Scouting, both
             38      nationwide and here in Utah;
             39          WHEREAS, today, the Girl Scouts of the USA is the largest girl-serving organization
             40      in the United States with 2.3 million girl members, 880,000 adult volunteers, 50 million
             41      alumnae, and 112 councils nationwide;
             42          WHEREAS, the rich diversity of our country is reflected in the multi-cultural mosaic of
             43      Girl Scout membership;
             44          WHEREAS, Girl Scouts are in schools, churches, temples, mosques, public housing,
             45      foster homes, and detention centers;
             46          WHEREAS, Girl Scouts are urban, suburban, rural and in virtually every zip code;
             47          WHEREAS, the Girl Scouts organization believes that one girl makes a difference, but
             48      together girls are changing the world;
             49          WHEREAS, the Girl Scouts of the USA boldly declared 2012 as the Year of the Girl
             50      and renews its commitment to the education and well-being of today's girls;
             51          WHEREAS, Girl Scouts urge the citizens of the state of Utah to help every girl of this
             52      generation to reach her full potential wherever she lives, whatever challenges face her, and
             53      however great the journey;
             54          WHEREAS, the Girl Scouts of the USA urges the citizens of Utah to help close critical
             55      gaps for girls in education, confidence, leadership, and to invest in girls today;
             56          WHEREAS, Girl Scouts is open to all girls grades K-12, and a girl's experience can be
             57      tailored to her unique interests;
             58          WHEREAS, every Girl Scout adventure is designed to nurture each girl and encourage


             59      personal growth through cutting-edge initiatives in environmental awareness and advocacy;
             60      health and wellness; science, technology, engineering and math (STEM); creative arts;
             61      financial literacy and entrepreneurship, and leadership development;
             62          WHEREAS, Girl Scouts of Utah serves the entire state with membership near 8,500
             63      girls and 3,500 adult volunteers;
             64          WHEREAS, local Girl Scouts provide more than 500,000 hours of service annually and
             65      are a vital part of Utah communities;
             66          WHEREAS, the official mission of Girl Scouts of Utah is to build girls of courage,
             67      confidence, and character who make the world a better place;
             68          WHEREAS, Girl Scouts of Utah provides a unique experience where a girl finds
             69      courage by pushing past her perceived limitations to reach for her dreams, finds confidence by
             70      discovering her strengths in a fun, girl-only, supportive environment, and where her character
             71      is shaped by learning values that strengthen herself, her community, and her world;
             72          WHEREAS, Girl Scout alumnae are living proof of their impact, as demonstrated by
             73      the fact that 80% of women business owners, 69% of female United States senators, 67% of
             74      female members of the House of Representatives, and virtually every female astronaut who has
             75      flown in space, was a Girl Scout;
             76          WHEREAS, for 100 years, Girl Scouts of the USA has done more than any other
             77      organization to provide leadership opportunities for girls; and
             78          WHEREAS, the 100th Anniversary Celebration of Girl Scouts of the USA is a
             79      once-in-a-lifetime opportunity:
             80          NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of the state of Utah, the
             81      Governor concurring therein, recognize the 100th Anniversary of the Girl Scouts of the USA,
             82      and express appreciation for the leadership, self-esteem, and character building the
             83      organization provides through its dedicated service to the girls and women of Utah.
             84          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be sent to the Girl Scouts
             85      of the USA and the Girl Scouts of Utah Council.
