This bill amends the accreditation requirements for nursing education programs.

one of the accrediting institutions from the Northwest Accreditation Commission to

the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities.

Be it enacted by the Legislature of the state of Utah:

Section 1.
Section
58-31b-601 (Effective 01/01/13)
is amended to read:

58-31b-601 (Effective 01/01/13). Minimum standards for nursing programs --
27
Medication aide training.
28
(1) To qualify as an approved education program for the purpose of qualifying
29
graduates for licensure under this chapter, a nursing education program shall:
30
(a) (i) be affiliated with an institution of higher education that is accredited by the:
31
(A) Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools;
32
(B) New England Association of Schools and Colleges;
33
(C) North Central Association of Colleges and Schools;
34
(D) [Northwest Accreditation Commission] Northwest Commission on Colleges and
35
Universities;
36
(E) Western Association of Schools and Colleges; or
37
(F) Southern Association of Colleges and Schools; and
38
(ii) be accredited by the:
39
(A) Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education;
40
(B) National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission; or
41
(C) Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs; or
42
(b) be approved by the board and comply with standards defined by division rules.

(2) An approved education program described in Subsection (1), may offer its didactic
44
courses using classroom, clinical, or online methods.

(3) In accordance with Title 63G, Chapter 3, Utah Administrative Rulemaking Act, and
46
the provisions of this chapter, the division shall make rules defining the minimum standards for
47
a medication aide certified training program to qualify a person for certification under this
48
chapter as a medication aide certified.

Section 2. Effective date.

This bill takes effect on January 1, 2013.
