             8      LONG TITLE
             9      General Description:
             10          This bill amends provisions related to the election of State Board of Education
             11      leadership.
             12      Highlighted Provisions:
             13          This bill:
             14          .    allows the State Board of Education to elect up to three members to serve as vice
             15      chairs of the board; and
             16          .    makes technical changes.
             17      Money Appropriated in this Bill:

             25      Be it enacted by the Legislature of the state of Utah:
             26          Section 1. Section 53A-1-201 is amended to read:
             27           53A-1-201. Election and appointment of officers -- Removal from office.


             28          (1) The State Board of Education shall elect from its members a chair, and at least one
             29      vice chair, but no more than three vice chairs, each year at a meeting held any time between
             30      November 15 and January 15.
             31          (2) (a) If the election of officers is held subsequent to the election of a new member of
             32      the board, but prior to the time that the new member takes office, the new member shall
             33      assume the position of the outgoing member for purposes of the election of officers.
             34          (b) In all other matters the outgoing member shall retain the full authority of the office
             35      until replaced as provided by law.
             36          (3) The duties of these officers shall be determined by the board.
             37          (4) The board shall appoint a secretary who serves at the pleasure of the board.
             38          (5) An officer appointed or elected by the board under this section may be removed
             39      from office for cause by a vote of two-thirds of the board.
