             8      General Description:
             9          This bill exempts the state, in certain circumstances, from the observance of daylight
             10      saving time.
             11      Highlighted Provisions:
             12          This bill:
             13          .    defines terms;
             14          .    in certain circumstances, exempts the state from federal law requiring observance of
             15      daylight saving time; and
             16          .    mandates the state observe mountain standard time throughout the year once the
             17      state is exempted from the observance of daylight saving time.

             26      Be it enacted by the Legislature of the state of Utah:
             27          Section 1. Section 63G-1-701 is enacted to read:

Part 7. Time Standardization

             29          63G-1-701. Exemption from daylight saving time -- Time zone observance.
             30          (1) As used in this section:
             31          (a) "Daylight saving time" means the period during a year when the observed time of
             32      day is advanced one hour according to the provisions of 15 U.S.C. Sec. 260a.
             33          (b) "Mountain standard time" means coordinated universal time retarded by seven
             34      hours, which is the standard time designated by 15 U.S.C. Sec. 261 as the time zone in which
             35      the state is situated.
             36          (2) (a) If seven states other than Utah adopt legislation exempting each state,
             37      respectively, from the provisions of 15 U.S.C. Sec. 260a, the state, subject to Subsection (2)(b),
             38      is exempt from the provisions of 15 U.S.C. Sec. 260a, which:
             39          (i) establish the observance of daylight saving time; and
             40          (ii) authorize a state to exempt itself from the requirement to observe daylight saving
             41      time.
             42          (b) The exemption of the state described in Subsection (2)(a) shall begin July 1 of the
             43      year following the year in which the seventh other state adopts an exemption to daylight saving
             44      time.
             45          (c) The entire state, and all of its political subdivisions, shall, beginning on the date
             46      described in Subsection (2)(b), observe mountain standard time at all times during a year going
             47      forward.
