8 General Description:
9 This bill enacts the Employee Break Act.
10 Highlighted Provisions:
11 This bill:
12 . defines terms; and
13 . requires a public employer to provide each public employee an unpaid meal break
14 of no less than 30 minutes for every eight hours that the public employee works in a
15 single day.

27 Be it enacted by the Legislature of the state of Utah:
28 Section 1. Section 34-48-101 is enacted to read:

31 34-48-101. Title.
32 (1) This chapter is known as the "Employee Break Act."
33 (2) This part is known as "General Provisions."
34 Section 2. Section 34-48-102 is enacted to read:
35 34-48-102. Definitions.
36 As used in this chapter:
37 (1) "Public employee" is as defined in Section 34-32-1.1 .
38 (2) "Public employer" is as defined in Section 34-32-1.1 .
39 Section 3. Section 34-48-201 is enacted to read:

41 34-48-201. Title.
42 This part is known as "Employee Meal Breaks."
43 Section 4. Section 34-48-202 is enacted to read:
44 34-48-202. Public employee meal breaks.
45 For every eight hours that a public employee works in a single day, a public employer
46 shall give the public employee the opportunity to take an unpaid meal period that:
47 (1) is no less than 30 minutes;
48 (2) occurs no later than five hours after the public employee's workday begins; and
49 (3) allows the public employee to be relieved of all duties and permitted to leave the
50 public employee's work station or area during the unpaid meal period.
