             8      General Description:
             9          This bill amends provisions relating to the dual language immersion program.
             10      Highlighted Provisions:
             11          This bill:
             12          .    requires a school that participates in the dual language immersion program to give a
             13      preference to an applicant to the school's program if the applicant speaks the
             14      program's language proficiently.
             15      Money Appropriated in this Bill:
             16          None

             20      AMENDS:
             21           53A-15-105 , as enacted by Laws of Utah 2008, Chapter 235

             23      Be it enacted by the Legislature of the state of Utah:
             24          Section 1. Section 53A-15-105 is amended to read:
             25           53A-15-105. Dual Language Immersion Program -- Pilot.
             26          (1) Subject to funding for the program, the State Board of Education shall establish a
             27      pilot program for school districts and schools to initially participate in the Dual Language


             28      Immersion Program.
             29          (2) The program shall provide funds as an incentive to 15 qualifying schools for the
             30      following languages:
             31          (a) six pilots for Chinese;
             32          (b) six pilots for Spanish;
             33          (c) two pilots for French; and
             34          (d) one pilot for Navajo.
             35          (3) Subject to funding for the program, a qualifying school shall:
             36          (a) receive up to $18,000 per year for up to six years;
             37          (b) establish an instructional model that uses 50% of instruction in English and 50% of
             38      instruction in another language; and
             39          (c) begin the instructional model described under Subsection (3)(b) in kindergarten or
             40      grade 1 and add an additional grade each year.
             41          (4) A qualifying school shall give a preference to an applicant to the school's dual
             42      language immersion program if the applicant speaks the program's language proficiently.
