·         Approve minutes of the June 14, 2023 meeting

 

2.    Public Education: School Security Task Force Update

The committee will hear an update on the work of the School Security Task Force. The task force was created by H.B. 61, 2023 General Session, to address safety and security in Utah’s public schools.

3.    Draft Legislation: Safe School Route Evaluations

The committee will consider draft legislation, “Safe School Route Evaluations,” which amends the requirements for local school boards’ traffic safety committees and child access routing plans.

4.    Sunset Review: SafeUT and School Safety Commission

The SafeUT and School Safety Commission, created in 53B-17-1203, is scheduled to sunset on January 1, 2025. Statute tasks the commission with coordinating statewide efforts related to the SafeUT Crisis Line. The committee previously heard this sunset review during the May 17, 2023 meeting.

5.    Sunset Review: Charter School Revolving Account Advisory Committee

The Charter School Revolving Account provides loans to charter schools for school building construction and renovation, new charter school startup, and charter school expansion costs. Statute allows the state board to create an advisory committee to review and make recommendations on loan requests. The statute creating this advisory committee, 53F-9-203(7), is scheduled to sunset July 1, 2024.

6.    Public Education: Student Achievement & Learning

The committee will hear a presentation about issues related to school attendance and discipline, and how those impact student achievement and learning.

The committee will consider draft legislation, “School District Amendments,” which would amend the process for dividing a school district.
