Enactment of this legislation may result in increased costs to the State Board of Education beginning in FY 2021. The actual cost of this legislation is not known. Assuming a 5% increase in the number of students eligible for state-supported transportation in FY 2019 and a cost of $600 per student for transportation, this legislation could cost a total of $5,850,000 to support approximately 9,750 new students. The state currently covers approximately 75% of the cost of state-supported transportation. Assuming that the state would pay 75% of the total cost, enactment of this bill may cost the state approximately $4,387,000 ongoing from the Education Fund.

Enactment of this legislation may result in increased costs to local education agencies (LEAs) beginning in FY 2021. The actual cost of this legislation is not known. Assuming a 5% increase in the number of students eligible for state-supported transportation in FY 2019 and a cost of $600 per student for transportation, this legislation could cost a total of $5,850,000 to support approximately 9,750 new students. Local funds currently cover approximately 25% of the cost of state-supported transportation. Assuming that locals would pay 25% of the total cost, enactment of this bill may cost LEAs approximately $1,463,000 ongoing. LEAs may also be required to purchase new school buses to accommodate the newly eligible students. New buses cost approximately $100,000 each and are purchased with local funds. Costs associated with this bill may vary by LEA.
