Line Item: Grand Jury

Function

The Legislature enacted the Grand Jury Reform Act in 1997 that created a separate line item for this purpose. Funding is to pay Grand Jury expenses when one is convened. The Act also authorized a Grand Jury Prosecution budget. These two items were combined for presentation on a year-to-year basis.

Statutory Authority

UCA 77-10a-20 creates a separate line item for grand jury expenses and authorizes payment of those expenses, as well as the expenses of a special prosecutor, when used.

Intent Language

Under Section 63J-1-603 of the Utah Code, the Legislature intends that appropriations of up to $400 provided for Grand Jury in Item 23 of Chapter 11 Laws of Utah 2012 shall not lapse at the close of Fiscal Year2013. The use of any nonlapsing funds shall be limited to travel expenses.
