FY 2016 Appropriation

The Pete Suazo Utah Athletics Commission regulates professional unarmed combat sports including boxing, kickboxing and mixed martial arts. Promoters, managers, contestants, seconds, referees and judges must be licensed under Utah Code. Fees are charged to help offset the cost of regulating unarmed sports in the State.

Appropriation Overview

During the 2015 General Session, the Legislature appropriated for Fiscal Year 2016, $226,700 from all sources for Pete Suazo Utah Athletics Commission. This is a 36.3 percent reduction from Fiscal Year 2015 revised estimated amounts from all sources. The total includes $161,500 from the General/Education Funds, an increase of 2.3 percent from revised Fiscal Year 2015 estimates.

Statutory authority for the Pete Suazo Utah Athletics Commission is provided under UCA 63C-11.

Intent Language

HB0003: Item 60

Under Section 63J-1-603 of the Utah Code, the Legislature intends that appropriations provided for the Pete Suazo Utah Athletic Commission in Laws of Utah 2014, Chapter 10, Item 12 shall not lapse at the close of Fiscal Year 2015. The use of any non-lapsing funds is limited to the Pete Suazo Utah Athletic Program: $175,000.

Funding for the Commission is from the General Fund and dedicated credits revenue. Appropriations are used for staff support and regulatory costs related to boxing and unarmed combat events.
