Subject: UTA Awarded 2014 Outstanding Public Transportation System of the Year
Date: Fri Jun 27 18:51:54 MDT 2014
I am pleased to announce that the Utah Transit Authority (UTA) has been named as the 2014 Outstanding Public Transportation System by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA), the international organization representing the transit industry in the United States and Canada.
This award is considered the most prestigious honor in the public transportation industry. APTA describes the award as, “given to [transit agencies] that have made outstanding contributions to the public transportation industry in North America. Winning an APTA Award means that you are ‘the best of the best’ and a distinguished leader.”
APTA President and CEO Michael Melaniphy said, “Congratulations to UTA for winning the prestigious 2014 Outstanding Public Transportation System Achievement Award. Winning this means that UTA is the best large public transportation system in North America. With aggressive and successful rail expansion, it’s not surprising that UTA saw record-breaking ridership growth in 2013. As a leader in innovation, both in operations and sustainability, UTA is a role model for other public transit agencies. UTA deserves this high honor.”
2013 was perhaps the most successful year in UTA’s history. UTA completed Utah’s first modern streetcar line and, keeping its promise made to voters in 2006, the agency concluded the FrontLines 2015 program with the opening of the Airport and Draper TRAX lines. The 2015 program also included the opening of the Mid-Jordan and West Valley TRAX lines and the Provo to Salt Lake FrontRunner extension. The FrontLines 2015 project was completed two years ahead of schedule and $300 million under budget.
Additionally, UTA finished 2013 nearly $7 million under budget and experienced its highest-ever ridership, over 44 million trips.
Now that we have successfully completed the rail expansion projects, UTA is enhancing its focus on operational excellence and outstanding customer service.
APTA presents three of these awards each year, based on the size of the transit agency. UTA falls within the largest category – systems providing more than 20 million trips annually – so we were competing with the largest transit systems in North America. Additionally, this is the fourth time UTA has received the Outstanding Public Transportation System award, the last time being in 2002.
In light of our recent accomplishments and the announcement of the 2014 Outstanding Public Transportation System Award, I would like to express my appreciation to you and the many other community partners that have supported UTA and helped our community develop and operate a superb transit system.
