“One cannot be pessimistic about the West. This is the native home of hope. When it fully learns that cooperation, not rugged individualism, is the quality that most characterizes and preserves it, then it will have achieved itself and outlived its origins. Then it has a chance to create a society to match its scenery.”
—Wallace Stegner

Dear Democrats,

It is in the spirit of Wallace Stegner that I ran for chair on the 29 county plan, and it is in that spirit that I now embark on it. Friends, the diversity decided our state and county conventions has shown that we are indeed the Big Tent Party, as Senator Dabakis dreamed, and worked so hard to bring to fruition. LDS Dems, Hispanic and Latino voters, ardent and fiery progressives, grassroots activists, business leaders, and centrist Democrats. Our Big Tent Party is still growing, as we expand out into counties and communities across our vast and diverse state. As we continue this cooperation, the great hallmark of Utah Democrats and the great contrast with the Republicans.

Unlike our opponents, our many voices make us stronger, not weaker.  They bring us together, not tear us apart. They are stronger whether we are calling for an investigation into the actions of then-AG Swallow, whether we are working to register 20,000 new voters by election day, bringing equal pay and a living wage to Utah, or keeping the pressure on to expand Medicaid.

This unique coalition, our Big Tent, has the opportunity and the responsibility, as do we all, to work towards that society that matches our incredible scenery. We owe it to all Utahns to create a society that is just, where there are good jobs for fair pay, access to basic and affordable health care for all, where we value and support our cities, neighborhoods, and the wilderness that surrounds them, and where we live free from discrimination and inequality.

Over the coming months and years, I will crisscross the state, and together we will bring the voices of regular Utahns back to Capitol Hill. We will make sure there is a Democratic presence in every county, and that each of them have the tools to succeed. We will cooperate, innovate, and energize. Our big tent, like our vistas, like our vision and like our possibilities, is limitless.

See you out there, Democrats.

Peter Corroon
Utah Democratic Party Chair

Welcome Peter – and thank you, Jim!

Democrats, the Dabakis era has come to a close at the state party – though it is alive and well in the Senate, on the radio, and in the million other ventures Jim has going at any moment. The Corroon era has just begun! Thank you to all who joined us at the 2014 Taylor & Mayne party and the 2014 convention. We set the Depot rocking, we raised the roof and boogied down, and then on Saturday, we conquered the Great Electronic Voting Breakdown of 2014, and nominated a great slate of candidates for November. If you missed it, check out this retrospective of the Dabakis era, this video honoring the 2014 Taylor & Mayne Awardees, Weston Clark & Laura Jo McDermaid, and finally, this video honoring Jim Dabakis and the huge contribution he's had on our state during his tenure as chair.

A milestone met!

Congratulations to our hardworking RFO’s and a huge, heartfelt thank you to our amazing volunteers, because during convention week we crossed 10,000 voters registered! The current figure is 10,594 – and counting. Democrats, this program is how we win. With districts won and lost by a few hundred votes in 2012, we must change the electorate to ensure victory in November. Can you spare an hour or two to help us make phone calls, or table in a community near you? Your candidates and your party need you!

We’re hiring!

Democrats, as we wish Angela Parkinson well on her road to Divinity School at the University of Chicago (and we think you should know that she turned down HARVARD to get there), we have a few spots we need to fill. First, are you passionate about organization? Love chatting with the awesome Dems who call and email our office daily? Thrive off of being a team player and making sure things are running smoothly? If so, you might just be our new office manager!

Or, are you perhaps more invested in ensuring all Utahns have a voice in their government? Are you friendly, persuasive, hard-working and cheerful? Happy tabling, knocking doors, and on the phone, spreading Democracy and the good word about how awesome voting is? If that’s you, apply to be our newest Regional Field Organizer!
