Dear Scott,

March was a busy month for the Ogden School Foundation!  We were thrilled to sponsor not just one, but two free community performances this month: Utah Shakespeare Festival's The Taming of the Shrew and the remarkable Cashore Marionettes.  We love being able to give back to our amazing community who gives us so much support!

Speaking of amazing community support, a big thank you goes out to all who supported our Love UT Give UT fundraising event.  Because of your generosity, the Ogden School Foundation raised over $9,000 in a single day and came in 2nd place for the state!  We love being part of such a great community and look forward to continuing our effort to enhance the education of the students in our district.  Thank you, Ogden!

Love UT Give UT Success:  YOU Are Amazing!
March 20 was a great day for the Ogden School Foundation! Thanks to our amazing community, the Ogden School Foundation came in 2nd place in the Education Category for the state!  By reaching the #2 spot, we will be awarded an additional $2,500 - that's in addition to the $5,570 from 246 donors and the $1,000 matching grant from the Elliott-Hall Company - bringing our total up to over $9,000!  We appreciate the volunteers on the Foundation Board and all of our employees for making this event successful.  Our community is certainly AMAZING!
Donor Spotlight: America First Credit Union
With a rich and established history, America First Credit Union ha s become one of
the largest, most stable and most progressive credit unions in the
country, and has remained a member-owned, not-for-profit cooperative financial institution. Established on March 16, 1939, America First Credit Union is celebrating 75 years of unsurpassed member service and quality.
The organization has a strong commitment to Utah schools. They believe in the value of education and support Utah education in a variety of ways - including giving volunteer time and financial support to school foundations - the Ogden School Foundation among them. "Supporting the Ogden School Foundation allows us to support all Ogden District schools with confidence. We know the foundation will be good stewards of our donated money, and will ensure that it is used to benefit Ogden City Schools in the areas most in need," said President/CEO John Lund.
Thank you, America First, for your continuing support of the Ogden School Foundation!
Shakespeare in the Schools
On March 10, over 500 Ogden School District students had the opportunity to see  the Utah Shakespeare Festival's The Taming of the Shrew thanks to sponsors Suzanne Lindquist, WSU's Stewart Library, Ogden High School, and the Ogden School Foundation.  After the play, almost three dozen high school drama students participated in an actor's workshop with the festival actors.  To see the full story in the Standard Examiner, click here.

OCSC Community Celebration Day

Come join the party! On April 17, you won't want to miss this exciting event to help raise funds for the Ogden Community Soccer Complex.  For more information, contact Ogden School Foundation board member Derick Wright at See you there!

Taylor Canyon Elementary Does Shakespeare

On March 20, the sixth grade Accelerated Learning Academy students at Taylor Canyon Elementary School performed a children's version of "Taming of the Shrew."  Written and directed by their teacher, Laura Anderson, students experienced all forms of theatrical production including set design/construction, stage directions, line memorization, and even serving in character at a community dinner theater.  Students spent many after school hours preparing for this special night and were honored to attend the professional version of "Taming of the Shrew" at Ogden High under the sponsorship of the Ogden School Foundation.  Here is what some students have said about this experience...

-Eli -"I have read Shakespeare books this year and was excited to act out one of
the stories. "

-Kiara - "Trying to remember the dances in front of the crowd was the most challenging part."

-Pierson - "I really liked my character and liked being a smooth talker."

-Tia - "The character wasn't like me at all, but that is what acting is all about."

-Rachel - "I thought it was really fun.  I started getting into my character when I started thinking about being mad at my own brother."

-Kip - "I would definitely do a play again because I want to be an actor when I grow up.  I would like to be discovered by someone out there someday."

Excellence in Teaching:  Teachers in the Spotlight

Each year the Ogden School Foundation recognizes teachers who have exemplified excellence in their teaching. We are pleased to highlight some of these teachers in our newsletter each month.

Emilee Summers of Gramercy Elementary "has emerged as an instructional leader at Gramercy," said Principal Jay Seese.  "She establishes and maintains relationships with her students and parents that allow her to push her students to meet the high standards and rigor that she imposes on her class.  She is the 3rd grade team leader and works very well with other members of the staff and faculty.  She's always willing to go the extra mile to help our school achieve our goals."

James Madison Elementary Principal Vincent Ardizzone says, "Stephanie Houtz is a  FANTASTIC teacher!  Stephanie's work ethic and dedication to her students is obvious in everything she does.  Stephanie is a hard worker, and is ready to go the extra mile for any assignment that needs extra attention.  She is a strong team leader, revamping her planning and instruction as needed to make our students successful.  She is honest, responsible, and gets along with the team. It is very difficult to find any area of improvement in her teaching but when we do find something, she never waits and strives to apply the suggestions right away."

Student Achievement: BLHS Latinos in Action
This year, the Ogden School Foundation was able to help support the Latinos in Action group at Ben Lomond High School.  Not only has this group of students served as tutors and translators throughout the community, but they have made some remarkable achievements of their own. 95% of the group's seniors have been accepted to a post-secondary education institution, all of the members have completed 120 hours of community service, and several have dramatically increased their GPA.  Way to go!  The Latinos in Action group was recently featured in a story in the Standard Examiner; to read the full story, click here.
