To whom it may concern:
I am writing to request your attention on the issue of expanding the Carson Smith Special Needs Scholarship.
I am a single mother of two children. I own, and actively run, three businesses her in the state. I work hard to create jobs for the local economy. The money that I bring home to my family is only the basic I need to survive while my businesses are growing.
In the last year my youngest daughter has received a long list of diagnosis, including Autism Spectrum Disorder. We have had her working with a variety of professionals from speech therapists, occupational therapists, counselors, etc. We have a difficult time finding any type of care for her as her conditions create difficult behaviors and require a great deal of patience. We have been asked to remove her from tumbling classes, library events, etc. I love my daughter deeply and want the absolute best for her in every situation, but truthfully, the process of working through her diagnosis and finding services for her has been frustrating, tiring, and very time consuming.
She was recently enrolled at the Pingree School for Autism. Since this time we have seen a decrease in violence, increase in sleep, weight and even started potty training. The impact on my family has been huge. Our stress levels have decreased and she actually smiles, laughs and sings. She NEVER did these things before. Imagine a toddler that never smiled!!
Because of the types of resources allocated to this school (A high teacher to student ratio, teachers with advanced degrees, etc.) this program is very costly. As it stands now, it is $3,000 a MONTH to be enrolled in this school. This is more than my entire income last year, yet we do not qualify for medicaid. These services are essential to help children like mine become productive citizens and members of society, not mention the happiness! Please vote to extend the scholarship to the pre-school services so families like mine can receive the services they so desperately need.
