Dear Public Education Appropriations Subcommittee member,

My son is currently attending Northern Utah Autism Program.  This program has been life changing for my son.  When he entered the program a year ago he had limited communication, did not interact with children his age and was often in his own world.  He now can communicate his needs and preference of certain items.  He now has an interest in the other children in his class and in our neighborhood, wanting to play and interact with them.  He has a very active imagination that he now has words to express and the ability to interact with the world around him.

I believe that all of this has been possible because of the Northern Utah Autism Program.  I feel that the time spent in the classroom and the discrete trial method of teaching has been essential in teaching my son how to interact and learn in the classroom.

Currently there is a waiting list of 80+ students that would also be able to benefit from this amazing program if there was funding.  I ask you to please support the expansion of Carson Smith Special Needs Scholarship. Doing this would allow more of these students to receive the early intervention that is the most powerful tool we have now for making a difference in the lives of children with ASD.

Thank you for your time and consideration,
Heather Clarke
