Dear David E. Lifferth,
America's deficits are set to skyrocket to historic heights, and with 18 trillion of debt, we must stop the irresponsible spending now. Thankfully, we don't need to wait on Congress, but you do need to act quickly to help pass a Balanced Budget Amendment.
Article V of the U.S. Constitution provides our state legislators with the power to amend the Constitution?the process is called a Convention of States and it's similar to how our Constitution was written and ratified. I believe it's the only way we can limit Congress' irresponsible spending habits, and I am asking for your immediate action.
"The Congress, whenever two thirds of both houses shall deem it necessary, shall propose amendments to this Constitution, or, on the application of the legislatures of two thirds of the several states, shall call a convention for proposing amendments, which, in either case, shall be valid to all intents and purposes, as part of this Constitution, when ratified by the legislatures of three fourths of the several states, or by conventions in three fourths thereof, as the one or the other mode of ratification may be proposed by the Congress" -Article V of the U.S. Constitution
I would encourage you to review this handbook put together by the American Legislative Exchange Council to understand the process fully. (hyperlink: http://www.alec.org/wp-content/uploads/article-five-handbook-1.pdf)
It's time for our federal government to live within its means, but it will only happen through a Balanced Budget Amendment. That's why I am asking you to support an Article V Convention for the sole purpose of passing a Balanced Budget Amendment.
