Dear Representative,

I am writing to request that you please support SB 45.  This bill removes criminal penalties on parents when their children are truant.

Because of my husband’s work schedule my family can only travel during the school year.  The last few years we have taken our children out of school for a week or two at a time to go on some educational trips that have really opened their eyes to the world around them.  We always inform the teachers beforehand and get the needed homework so that they can be doing it while they are gone.  We also make sure that we do many educational things on our trips and talk about history, architecture, geography and culture.  I feel that our children get a better understanding of the world around them, and get an amazing education, more than they would learn in a classroom.  I have had several letters from my children’s school about the actions that will be taken if they miss any more days of school and telling me that we are breaking the law by not having them in school.  I feel like I am categorized as a criminal for wanting my children to experience the world and broaden their horizons.   Also, if they happen to be sick, I would much rather they stay at home instead of sending them to school anyway just so they don’t miss any more days, but infecting the whole school.   I would never let my children miss school just for fun, as I place a very high value on their education.

Please help to protect parents from this abusive law.  I appreciate your help!
