Subject: OPPOSE Bills/Resolutions that Create Partisan School Board Elections (HB0186, (F. Gibson), HB 305 (D. McCay), HJR016 (D. McCay), SB 0104S03(A. Jackson), HB 0297 (N. Thurston), HB 0342 (K. Powell), and HB 0360 (L. Christensen)

Dear Member of the House Education Committee,
I am writing to express my opposition to the referenced bills/resolution that create partisan school board elections.
I strongly oppose any measure that will bring party politics into the school system. There is NO need to create a scheme for partisan school board elections. Personally, I'm appalled by what seems to be an intent on the part of our legislature to force individuals, who are legitimately interested in improving our state's educational system, to label themselves as Republican or Democrat in an effort to fill school board positions with only those individuals who claim association with the predominant political party in Utah. Not only is this unfair, but it is short-sighted. If the bills/resolution were to become law, it would in many cases leave the choice of school board officials to a decision based on party affiliation rather than a sound decision based on who actually is the best person for the job.
Based on the foregoing, I respectfully request that you DO NOT vote these bills/resolution out of committee.
Do what is best for the state and our educational system. Do NOT bring party politics into the educational system.
