I would like to voice my support for the proposed School Counselor Certificate to be discussed before your committee today. One of our chief focuses as Utah school counselors is college and career readiness for all our students. This is directly linked to Utah’s Prosperity 2020 goal to increase graduation rates for students in the next five years. Because I work in a low income, highly diverse jr. high school, many of our students don’t believe they will graduate from high school, let alone attend college. I need more resources and information to help not only our diverse students, but all our students begin to believe that they are capable of attaining a good education. Since this certificate concentrates in part on the needs of diverse students and how to encourage jr. high students to start thinking about college and their future, this is excellent professional development which directly relates to my daily work. I believe this certificate is vital to my effectiveness as a school counselor.
Thank you for your time,
Kennedy Jr. High
