Dear Sir or Madam, The Utah legislature is currently considering House Bill 206: Bail and Pretrial Release. I am contacting you today to urge you to OPPOSE H.B. 206. H.B. 206 mandates the presumption of free release in nearly all criminal cases – thereby severely restricting judicial discretion to set bail in appropriate cases. Reducing a judge’s discretion to set bail is dangerous and threatens the safety of the public. Other states, like New York and Missouri, have recently adopted similar reforms which have negatively impacted the safety of their citizens with an explosion of crime. As a citizen and voter...I cannot support soft on crime measures that serve to erode the concept of holding criminal offenders accountable for their actions. These policies make our communities less safe and deprive victims of crime their day in court. I urge you to OPPOSE House Bill 206 and keep Utah safe! Sincerely, Lavender Lealaitafea 2862 W 2730 S, Salt Lake City, UT 84119
